ROLLERCOASTER EAST LONDON WEEKEND

Josh le Roux had a rollercoaster of a race day at the East London Grand Prix Circuit last Saturday (6 August 2022), but ultimately conquered the track and came home with a race win.

Josh had good pace throughout Friday’s practice sessions, but kept his best performance for the qualifying session, when he set the fastest lap time and secured pole position for both races.

The start of race one didn’t quite go as planned with Josh dropping from first to third off the line. He quickly regained his composure and by turn two, he was in a three car challenge for the lead. Unfortunately there wasn’t enough tarmac for all three drivers and Josh ran off the track. He had to make a fairly long detour to get back on track and this dropped him through the field.

Before Josh had time to make up ground, a massive accident caused the race to be red flagged. Teams waited anxiously whilst medics attended to Ewan Holtzhausen. The track was eventually cleared and racing got back underway, although all of the Investchem Formula 1600 competitors were clearly shaken. Josh was eventually classified tenth.

It was emotionally taxing, Josh was able to get a clear run in race two, taking an unchallenged lights to flag victory.

“It was an exceptionally difficult weekend. There are few things worse than seeing your competitor and friend involved in an accident like the one Saturday and not knowing the extent of his injuries. We thank God for protecting Ewan, in what could have been far worse than a hairline fracture on his L1 vertebra. We wish Ewan a speedy recovery and keep him and his family in our thoughts,” expressed Josh.

“I am glad that I was able to conquer East London and thank my team for doing an outstanding job, he concluded.

Josh leaves East London with his championship lead intact.
