CHALLENGING WEEKEND FOR JOSH LE ROUX

Round four of the 2022 Investchem Formula 1600 Championship took place at Red Star Raceway this past Saturday (2 July) and what started out as a perfect weekend, turned into a challenging race day for Josh le Roux.

Josh had a perfect start to the event, topping the timesheets throughout Friday’s practice sessions. He put in a sterling qualifying lap to put himself on pole position. Unfortunately, a miscalculation saw Josh cross the scales marginally under the required weight and he his qualifying laps were scratched. He would have to start both heats from the back of the field.

Race one started with Josh down in 12th place. He had a good start, but didn’t risk any daredevil moves into turn one. He methodically picked off the competition and was up to sixth position by the end of lap one. Josh continued to push hard, making some brilliant passes under braking, to end the race third.

Having to start from 12th again for race two was a daunting task, but Josh tackled the challenge fearlessly. He moved up five places on lap one and was up to fifth a few laps later. On the final corner of the final lap, Josh made the pass for fourth.

Josh ended the day third overall.

“It was shaping up to be a perfect weekend and I really thought I had a good chance to take at least one race win. Unfortunately, I was penalised after the qualifying session for being underweight and this put a completely different perspective on the weekend. I went from chasing a race win to doing championship damage control. I am really happy to have ended the day on the podium,” expressed Josh.

The next round of the championship will take place in East London on 6 August.
