JOSH LE ROUX TAKES CAPE TOWN WIN
Steelform Art driver, Josh Le Roux has made a good start to his 2022 Investchem Formula 1600 Championship campaign by taking a race win at the first round of the season, held at Killarney Raceway this past weekend (5 March).
Friday practice sessions are always a good indication of who the pace setters for the weekend will be. This is especially true for the first event of the year. The lap times were exceptionally close, with the top 8 drivers all within one second of each other. Josh was never lower than fourth during these sessions.
Josh pulled out all the stops in qualifying, setting the second quickest lap time, placing his Sparco backed F1600 on the front row of the grid for the first heat.
Josh held onto second place off the line, amidst a flood of very fast and very eager competitors. He positioned himself perfectly, getting good drive down the back straight and passing for the lead around the outside of the sweep. Not only did Josh execute the pass perfectly, but he was also able to make the pass stick.
The RDSA driver went on to lead the field for 6 laps, despite the increasing pressure coming from behind. The next two laps were nail biting with Josh being passed and repassing for the lead just about every corner. Unfortunately, contact on the final lap forced Josh to run wide and drop down the field. He eventually recovered to cross the finish line fifth.
Josh started the second heat from pole and drove his heart out to capitalize on his position. Although under some pressure in the closing stages of the race, he took an unchallenged victory. The first in his main circuit career.
“I am very happy with the results from the weekend and hope this is the first of many more! The racing was very competitive and very close, it is going to be an exciting season. A huge thank you to my team, my family and my sponsors (New Heights, RDSA, Investchem, SteelForm Art and Sparco),” expressed Josh.
Josh ended the day third in the overall standings.
